Top US Lawman Sports Liverpool Necktie at Congressional Hearing

The nation's top FBI official Kash Patel was seen in front of the Senate judicial panel on Tuesday sporting a tie featuring the logo of EPL side Liverpool.

Social Media Buzz

His accessory selection sparked questions on social media. Firstly, it is highly unusual for a government official to sport a necktie featuring the insignia of a business or sports team. For another, Patel has not publicly expressed support for Liverpool previously—that is not verbally.

However, he has been photographed sporting Liverpool ties on at least two distinct instances. The first was on 12 December 2024, when Patel was visiting congressional members on Capitol Hill following Donald Trump’s election victory. At the time, he was speculated to be entering the administration. Another instance took place roughly five months later, on 9 April 2025, at a press event highlighting the capture of drug suspects by US law enforcement.

Multiple Ties

Notably, the tie worn on Tuesday was distinct from the earlier one. The earlier design had thick stripes and a subtle logo, while the newer tie featured thinner stripes and a more prominent logo—known as the classic design.

His apparent owns several Liverpool ties suggests that his selection is deliberate.

Contentious Hearing

During Tuesday’s hearing, the mood turned contentious on multiple occasions. Patel engaged in a loud argument with US lawmakers Cory Booker and Adam Schiff. He stood by his management of the FBI, his dismissal of longtime staff involved in probes concerning the Capitol attacks, and a social media post in which he announced that a suspect was in custody for the murder of right-wing figure Charlie Kirk—a statement that proved premature.

“I don’t see it as a mistake,” Patel stated to senators. “I view it as working with the people to confirm that there was a subject in custody.”

Political Contrast

If Patel does follow Liverpool, it would symbolize a stark clash of ideological loyalties. Being among the US’s foremost law enforcement officers, Patel has been a public face of a Trump’s renewed presidency that has employed heavy-handed methods to affect various areas of public life.

This includes operations by ICE in open areas that have led to the detention of many of foreign nationals regardless of their legal status or citizenship. It also includes the sending of government officers to left-leaning US cities in due to alleged higher offense levels—assertions that have been debunked.

Liverpool’s Ethos

Liverpool, on the other hand, is recognized to be one of the more left-leaning clubs in Europe, from one of the most left-leaning cities in the UK.

Legendary Liverpool coach Bill Shankly once said: “I believe the only way to live and to be truly successful is by collective effort, with everyone working for each other, everyone helping each other, and everyone having a share of the rewards at the end of the day.”

Though the business of Liverpool have changed in recent times, elements of collectivist ideology remain. Former head coach Jürgen Klopp, who guided the club to great success from 2015 to 2024, described his own politics by saying: “When I succeed, I want others to do well, too. One thing I will never do in my life is vote for the conservative party.”

Historical Tensions

The club’s fans also have a significant history of distrust toward law enforcement. Much of this originates in the Hillsborough tragedy of 1989, which took the lives of 97 Liverpool fans. Initially, police accused the crowd of violence and intoxication. Years later, separate investigations found that the stampede was due to gross negligence by authorities, who had deceived the public to shift responsibility.

Patel’s Background

Patel gained attention after the events of 6 January 2021, when he supported a legal defense fund for those arrested in connection with the Capitol breach. A former lawyer and advisor to right-wing politicians, Patel used his association with the previous Trump government to develop commercial projects and a media career. In both capacities, he advanced several unproven claims, including discredited allegations of voting irregularities and misleading information about Covid-19 vaccines.
