Doris Secures Spot in Ireland Squad While Joe McCarthy Omitted

Ireland rugby squad announcement update

Returning head coach Andy Farrell has included captain Doris in his Irish roster for the autumn internationals, however lock McCarthy misses out.

Doris, who has not played since having a shoulder operation in the start of May, has come back to provincial training, but it remains unclear if he will be ready to play against New Zealand in Chicago on 1 November.

Second row Joe McCarthy, however, was not considered after failing to recover from the foot injury suffered during the first Lions match against the Wallabies in July.

Ulster player Izuchukwu and southern province wing Nash are not included due to injury, and full-back Hugo Keenan had already been ruled out after having hip surgery after the summer tour.

Leinster forward McCarthy - Joe's younger brother - is the sole new player in the 34-player group, however the Irish Rugby Football Union states uncapped Munster duo Edogbo and Brian Gleeson and once-capped western province winger Shayne Bolton will head to the US as "reserves".

Following playing the All Blacks at the Chicago stadium in a repeat of their 2016 meeting, Ireland will play the Brave Blossoms, Australia and world champions South Africa in Dublin.

"It's an exciting group to the panel and there's an opportunity for the veteran members and for those who made their debuts on the summer tour to the Lelos and Portugal," commented the coach, back to Ireland duty after a break to lead the Lions tour to Australia.

In a largely experienced squad, the Dublin club's Sam Prendergast and Munster's Jack Crowley will again compete for the starting number 10 position. The fly-half role is remains available, as the two players set to play against each other for the first occasion in Saturday's United Rugby Championship game at the Dublin venue.

Frawley is the third fly-half selected with the coach opting against selecting Leinster's Byrne.

At scrum-half, Farrell has selected British and Irish Lion Jamison Gibson-Park and Craig Casey, who captained the national side to the summer Test wins over Georgia and Portugal. There is also a recall for the western province's Blade, chosen to club-mate Ben Murphy.

Henshaw, Aki, Garry Ringrose and McCloskey form an veteran group of centre choices. Jamie Osborne is another option in the centres, though the 23-year-old is also a leading candidate to deputise for the full-back at full-back.

Outside backs James Lowe, Mack Hansen, O'Brien and Jacob Stockdale are named. O'Brien shone on his national team debut during the summer with two tries apiece in the victories over the Lelos and the Lobos.

McCarthy is the sole fresh addition in the Irish pack. The loose-head prop has started a couple of Leinster's URC league games so far and played in the second string's loss by the English in the English city earlier this year.

The 22-year-old was selected in caretaker coach Paul O'Connell's summer squad, but did not earn a international appearance.

Southern province second row Ahern, who earned his debut appearances in those matches, is retained, and experienced Ulster second row Iain Henderson is back after missing the summer tour.

Conan, who started each of the Lions matches over the summer, is poised to cover for Doris should the captain does not regain fitness in time to face the All Blacks.

The national team will assemble in the capital on Monday before flying to the US on Tuesday.
