A police sergeant who rushed to the help of a colleague that was assaulted by a knife attacker was granted the Royal Recognition for Valor.

Sergeant Tim Ansell fought with 27-yr-old Jacob Brown after he pressed a blade to the neck of his fellow officer Sgt Marc Foster.

Brown launched his attack as the officers and their partner, Police Constable Marcus Wolstencroft, were conversing to a driver after a vehicle incident in Whalley Range in July 2023.

Brown stabbed and slashed both Sgt Ansell and Sergeant Foster before PC Wolstencroft incapacitated him with a electric weapon.

"Policeman knifed," PC Wolstencroft could be heard saying over his radio.

Bodyworn and vehicle camera recording released by the force depicted Brown, wearing in black with a head covered, run up to Sergeant Foster from behind with a blade pointed forward.

He collided with the officer who tripped and dropped to the pavement, before Sgt Ansell jumped in and tried to wrestle him to the ground despite being continually attacked with the blade.

Police Constable Wolstencroft drew his Taser and awaited a open target, concluding the fight to an end.

Sgt Ansell stated audibly: "Please provide something on my throat here, I got knifed in the throat."

Sergeant Ansell sustained multiple open wounds to his neck and further injuries to his limbs and body, while Sergeant Foster experienced knife wounds.

The department said Sergeant Foster used his bare hands to stop his fellow officer's blood loss before paramedics came.

The new award comes subsequent to the law enforcement team received organizational Bravery Awards in October 2023 and the prestigious bravery honor from the regional union branch in spring 2024.

They further earned a Area Courage Honor in July 2024.

"The efforts of all three officers eventually protected themselves and meant no members of the public experienced any wounds."

Brown was sentenced to an secure medical confinement in April 2024, as stated by authorities.
